Moldova Revamps Education: AI, Tech & EU Backing

The topic of artificial intelligence (AI) will be a key focus of the first event in the "Moldova for Education" Campaign.

This initiative will bring together officials from the Ministry of Education and Research with representatives from Microsoft and Google. In a video message, the European Union Ambassador to Chișinău expressed the bloc's member states' support for the Republic of Moldova's efforts to provide quality education to all its citizens.

Minister of Education Dan Perciun announced that the first event of the "Moldova for Education" Campaign will feature discussions on artificial intelligence and the regulatory measures surrounding it. He added that experts from Hungary and Poland will be present to share their experiences in implementing digital textbooks.

"Our goal is to issue a call to action for our entire society to mobilise and contribute to raising the quality of education in the Republic of Moldova," Perciun stated. "As you are aware, and as the PISA results published in 2023 demonstrate, 50% of our students do not achieve the minimum competency level. We are currently experiencing a shortage of 7,000 teachers. Therefore, we have chosen the slogan 'Moldova for Education' to acknowledge the significant challenges within our education system and the necessity for all of us to work together to address these issues."

The European Union Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Janis Majeiks, emphasised the commitment of the European Union member states to supporting the Chișinău authorities' endeavours to ensure equitable access to quality education for all citizens. This support includes the repair of kindergartens and schools, the facilitation of educational exchange programs, and the provision of scholarships funded by the European Union.

"The European Union applauds Moldova's efforts to align itself with the best practices in European education," Majeiks said. "This alignment has become even more important in light of Moldova's aspirations to join the European Union. Equal access to a good education is essential. This necessitates a collaborative effort to ensure that no one is left behind and that every individual receives the support they need to reach their full potential."

It is important to note that "Moldova for Education Week" is currently underway throughout the Republic of Moldova. Educational institutions across the country are engaged in discussions on a variety of topics, including methods for improving teacher training processes and the development of a new curriculum for the coming years.
