Moldova Boosts Defences with $1.3M Cyber Aid
Moldova has taken a significant step forward in bolstering its defences against cyberattacks.
Today, the National Institute for Innovation in Cybersecurity "Cybercor" received a $600,000 equipment donation from USAID. This donation includes computers, servers, data processing centres, and network connectivity equipment.
According to Prime Minister Dorin Recean, data security and cybersecurity are becoming increasingly critical for Moldova. This is particularly true in the current climate of digitalization of public services and the ongoing threat of hybrid attacks launched by Russia.
"As our enemies, both Moldova and other countries around the world, increasingly employ cyber tools, it is imperative that we equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and equipment to safeguard our public services and protect our citizens' private data," stated Prime Minister Recean. "Furthermore, we must dedicate additional resources to cybersecurity research to ensure the continued protection of our critical infrastructure."
The United States Ambassador to Chisinau, Kent Longsdon, emphasised that cybersecurity is a key component of the United States' cooperation programs with the Moldovan government.
"The United States reaffirms its commitment to strengthening Moldova's cybersecurity posture, particularly in light of the brutal invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing threat of transregional cyberattacks emanating from Russia," Ambassador Longsdon said. "We are also committed to transforming the Cybercor Center into a leading centre of excellence, with the goal of training 500 cybersecurity professionals and 1,000 public officials within the next three years."
The total investment from USAID, Sweden, and Great Britain through the Future Technologies Project amounts to $1.3 million. This breaks down to $600,000 allocated for IT equipment and $700,000 designated for essential infrastructure.
Earlier in 2024, Moldova inaugurated the National Institute for Innovation in Cybersecurity "Cybercor." The institute's primary mission is to advance education and research in the cybersecurity field by providing training opportunities for students, faculty, and other interested individuals.
Situated on the campus of the Technical University of Moldova, the Cybercor Institute focuses on two key elements designed to cultivate a skilled cybersecurity workforce. These elements include a comprehensive academic program and practical laboratory courses, which are scheduled to launch in the fall of 2024.
