Moldova-EU Power Link: A Step Toward Energy Independence
A 190-kilometre long overhead power line is planned for construction in the coming years.
This line will serve to interconnect the energy system of the Republic of Moldova with those of Romania and the European Union, bolstering energy security in the region. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding today marks a significant step forward in this project.
The new high-voltage power line will boast a capacity of 400 kilovolts and will become the third interconnection between the Republic of Moldova and Romania. It will route through the Strășeni and Gutinaș power stations. Completion of the Moldovan section of the line is expected by the end of 2029.
This project is anticipated to yield significant benefits for Moldova. Energy Minister Victor Parlicov emphasised that the country will achieve energy independence and become more attractive to investors upon completion of these interconnection projects. Furthermore, Moldova is expected to achieve integration into the European energy market by the end of 2028, prior to officially becoming a member of the European Union. This integration will be facilitated by the combined effects of the new power line and the Vulcănești-Chișinău line, currently under construction.
The United States is playing a key role in supporting Moldova's energy independence. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding today coincided with the announcement of a $220 million financial aid package from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This funding will contribute to the construction of the high-voltage power line, enhancing Moldova's energy resilience and its ability to secure reliable and affordable energy.
