Global Response: Berlin's Accusation of Cyber Attack
Berlin is accusing Moscow of perpetrating a cyber attack. During a press conference, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock unequivocally stated that the cyber assault, allegedly orchestrated by Russia against Germany, is utterly intolerable and unacceptable.
The official vowed that there would be repercussions.
"We can now state unequivocally that we can attribute this cyber attack to a group known as APT28, led by Russian intelligence services. Essentially, this was a cyber attack supported by Russia against Germany, and it is utterly intolerable and unacceptable," Baerbock asserted.
She disclosed that the federal investigation into this matter, targeting the Social Democratic Party of Germany in January 2023, has just concluded. It is noteworthy that the group, led by Russian intelligence services and also known as Fancy Bear, stands accused of numerous cyber attacks worldwide, as reported by News.ro.
Baerbock's remarks followed a meeting in Adelaide with her Australian counterpart Penny Wong, who expressed deep concern and assured Berlin of Canberra's support.
"We have already aligned with the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and New Zealand regarding malicious cyber activities attributed to APT28," stated Wong.
The APT28 group, also recognized as Fancy Bear, faces accusations of numerous cyber attacks worldwide. In 2023, the EU's IT security agency took note of reports in the German press indicating that an SPD official was the target of a cyber attack "that may have resulted in data leakage." According to the agency, these reports presented "clear indications" of Russian origin.
