Combatting Disinformation: Maia Sandu's Stance on Media Oversight
Upon interview with a Russian blogger, the head of state, Maia Sandu, clarified that the suspension of television broadcasts by the Commission for Exceptional Situations was not censorship but a response to illegal funding.
She emphasised the importance of upholding the law and the need to combat disinformation. Sandu also discussed the prevalence of both criticism and positive content on media platforms. Additionally, actions were taken to block websites and television channels spreading disinformation, leading to the establishment of a centre to counter such efforts.
It is worth noting that in recent years, the Commission for Exceptional Situations of the Republic of Moldova has blocked numerous websites, primarily managed by the Russian Federation, and banned 12 television channels. This action was taken due to their dissemination of disinformation regarding the Ukrainian conflict and promotion of foreign interests. Furthermore, to safeguard the informational sphere against disinformation, manipulation, and foreign interference, the Center for Strategic Communication and Countering Disinformation was established last year, as a legislative initiative led by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu.
