Moldova Imports Sunflower Seeds to Prevent Oil Price Hike
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry announced that four companies have been granted import licences for sunflower seeds, valid for a period of 30 days.
This decision was made due to depleted sunflower seed stocks at the beginning of May and the need to prevent price hikes for oil.
Customs data from the Republic of Moldova shows that roughly 55,000 tons of sunflower seeds for oil production were exported between April 1 and May 2. Additionally, processors have contracted 7,600 tons of seeds.
Last month, a company operating three agricultural combines in Bălți, Ceadîr-Lunga, and Giurgiulești suspended operations. The company faced difficulties in securing sufficient sunflower seeds from both the domestic market and through imports due to the licensing requirements imposed by the authorities.
