History or Math? Moldova's New High School Tests

This year, students applying to the most competitive high schools in Moldova will face more complex entrance exams compared to the exercises on the national middle school graduation exam, according to Lilia Ivanov, director of the National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation.

Graduates applying to humanities programs will take an entrance exam in history, while those applying to science programs will take an entrance exam in mathematics.

"The capacity exam, designed for an average level of difficulty, naturally necessitates a more complex assessment for students vying for admission to high school through the entrance exam," Ivanov explained. "While the exact difficulty level remains undetermined, the test items will certainly be more challenging than those on the national exams."

Lilia Ivanov further stated that these entrance exams will be administered centrally at a designated educational institution in Chisinau to ensure all students take the test under fair conditions. "If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of this centre, we will organise the exam at two locations," Ivanov clarified.

The previous Ministry of Education admissions process relied on students' grades at the end of middle school. The National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation is now accepting applications from high schools that wish to hold entrance exams.

Starting this year, students with a grade point average below 6 will not be eligible for high school enrollment.
