The European Council extended the liberalization of trade with the Republic of Moldova for another year
Producers from the Republic of Moldova will export to the big European market plums, grapes and other Moldovan agricultural products, without taxes and quantitative restrictions, for another year. It happens after the European Council extended on Monday, May 13, the liberalization of trade between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Moldova.
“Liberalization, even temporary, helps the competitiveness of our agricultural exports and helps our farmers identify new markets. While Russia imposes embargoes, the EU remains a solid partner, opening up the market more and more. Another proof of the constant support of the European Union for our country. We thank our European partners", wrote the Minister of Economy, Dumitru Alaiba, on social networks.
The trade liberalization measures will take effect from 25 July 2024, when the current liberalization measures expire. Exports from the Republic of Moldova to the EU: statistical data.
The export of plums increased the most during this period, according to the data made public by the Minister of Economy. More precisely, if in 2021 the Republic of Moldova exported almost 26 thousand tons of plums to EU countries, then in 2023 the figure exceeded 60 thousand tons exported.
The export of grapes has exceeded the quotas foreseen, by 62%; the cherry one - by 93 percent, and the plum one - by 300%. "All this thanks to the temporary liberalization. And obviously, there is room for more. We can do more. Our products are appreciated", declares the Minister of Economy.
The official states that, thanks to the temporary liberalization decision, in 2023 the farmers of the Republic of Moldova did business worth 89.5 million dollars, 129% more than in 2022.
We mention that exports from the Republic of Moldova to the European Union increased from 1.9 billion dollars in 2021 to 2.5 billion dollars in 2022.
