Romanian Citizen Detained for Spying for Russia: DIICOT Charges
A Romanian citizen has been accused by the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime Offences (DIICOT) of gathering and sending military information to the Russian Embassy in Bucharest, reports Europa Liberă.
The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed by the authorities, was detained by prosecutors on charges of treason.
According to a press release from DIICOT, beginning in 2022, the year Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the individual monitored several Romanian and NATO military objectives near the municipality of Tulcea, a county on the border with Ukraine.
"He collected military information and took photographs of military combat equipment and personnel movements in the border area with Ukraine, which he sent to diplomats at the Russian Embassy in Bucharest," revealed DIICOT.
Prosecutors conducted searches at his home, where they seized several pieces of evidence.
The Romanian citizen was brought before the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which ordered 30 days of preventive detention.
