Spain-Ukraine Aid Pact: Bilateral Cooperation for Security and Reform

Spain will provide Ukraine with a military aid package totaling one billion euros. Additionally, Spanish authorities have pledged to offer assistance amounting to five billion euros over the next three years.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on Monday, May 27, during his visit to Madrid.

Simultaneously, Zelensky announced that today, in Madrid, he signed a bilateral Cooperation Agreement in the security field with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Zelensky emphasised, "This year, Spain will provide Ukraine with 1 billion euros in military aid, and 5 billion over the next three years. Our agreement highlights cooperation in humanitarian aid, economic recovery, reconstruction, support for Ukrainian reforms towards EU and NATO accession, our peace formula, and strengthening sanctions against Russia."

During the dialogue with the Spanish prime minister, Zelensky provided updates on the frontline situation and Russia's efforts to escalate the conflict.

"In recent weeks, our soldiers have been defending against another Russian offensive operation. Therefore, we must now intensify our collaborative efforts with partners to ensure greater security and to tangibly restrain Russia for the sake of peace, using all available means," concluded the Ukrainian president.

It is worth mentioning that earlier on Monday, El Pais reported that Spain will commit to sending Ukraine Patriot anti-aircraft missiles manufactured in the USA, along with 19 Leopard 2A4 tanks manufactured in Germany, as well as other weapons produced in Spain, including anti-drone equipment and ammunition.

El Pais clarified that the 12 missiles to be handed over to Ukraine do not constitute complete anti-missile defence systems.

Sanchez stated that sending Patriot launchers is not possible, but Spain already supplies the missiles.

Spokespersons for the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the report from El Pais.
