Law enforcement cracks down on vote-buying in Căușeni
National Anti-Corruption Centre (CNA)officers and prosecutors are conducting searches in Căușeni, south-eastern Moldova, as part of a new criminal case related to electoral corruption.
The investigations are being carried out at the residence of a woman in the Căușeni district, who is under investigation for vote-buying in favor of a registered party candidate in the presidential election.
Law enforcement officials are expected to seize the items used in the crime, identify the source of the funds, and investigate any potential connections between the individuals involved and members of organized criminal groups acting on behalf of political organizations. According to the CNA, the suspect is expected to be questioned and will be investigated while under freedom.
Individuals who offer money to influence the outcome of an election face imprisonment for up to 5 years and a fine exceeding 50,000 lei (~2,600 euro). To ensure the recovery of damages, law enforcement agencies can seize the individual’s assets.
Furthermore, individuals who report illegal activities and cooperate with the criminal authorities may be exempt from criminal or administrative liability.
