Moldova's Historic EU Referendum: Citizens Shape Future

The referendum on the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union is poised to be a historic event, shaping the country's trajectory for the foreseeable future as citizens determine the fate of the state.

Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu made this declaration during the "In Context" program on Moldova 1.

"I consider the upcoming referendum in October and the presidential elections to be of utmost importance. The referendum will profoundly influence the country's path for years to come. It represents a historic moment where Romanians in the Republic of Moldova forge their destiny. The European choice is paramount; it symbolises peace and offers access to a competitive market—the EU market. At the very least, it ensures the opportunity to carve out one's own future," stated the Member of the European Parliament.

It is noteworthy that this autumn in the Republic of Moldova presidential elections and a referendum will take place. Citizens will elect the future president for a four-year term, while also being called upon to participate in the referendum, answering the question: "Do you support the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union?". Furthermore, the Constitution is set to be amended with a new title: "Integration into the European Union."

President of the Constitutional Court, Domnica Manole, has previously stated that the referendum results will hold supreme legislative power and will not require additional parliamentary approval.

The constitutional referendum regarding our country's accession to the European community was initiated by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, at the end of 2023. The referendum's purpose, along with the constitutional amendments, is to affirm the aspirations of European integration, charting a course towards the European value space, and establishing European integration as a strategic objective for the Republic of Moldova.
