We remind you that Ion Munteanu was sworn in on Saturday, June 1, in the position of general prosecutor for a seven-year term. Ion Munteanu won the repeated competition organized by the Superior Council of Prosecutors.
The appointment of the General Prosecutor was found in the first recommendation of the European Commission, the one regarding the completion of the essential stages of justice reform and the filling of vacant positions in key institutions in the field. The Chisinau authorities undertook to fulfill this condition by December 2022, but they failed, for various reasons.
The interim period at the General Prosecutor's Office was extended, first due to the disputes related to Alexandru Stoianoglo, suspended from office in October 2021, investigated in several criminal cases and dismissed in September 2023. Then, the failed contests delayed the appointment of the general prosecutor.
The repeated contest, won by Ion Munteanu, took place based on a new regulation, consulted with the experts of the Venice Commission. In the mandate that he took over on June 1, Munteanu said that he aims to ensure the independence of the institution and the continuity of investigations on resounding cases.
