Blinken returns to Egypt and Israel at a critical moment in the situation in the region
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected on a visit to Egypt and Israel on Monday at a critical moment in the situation in the region. Washington is trying to increase its pressure on the Islamist group Hamas and the Israeli state to reach a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and to ensure that the war does not spread to neighboring Lebanon, reports Reuters quoted by Agerpres.
This will be his eighth tour of the region since Hamas attacked communities in southern Israel last October 7, triggering the bloodiest episode in the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Blinken's visit comes after US President Joe Biden on May 31 presented a three-phase Israeli ceasefire proposal that calls for a permanent cessation of hostilities, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees, and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. The visit also comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benny Gantz announced his resignation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's war cabinet on Sunday, withdrawing the only centrist force from the far-right coalition.
The US secretary of state's tour of the Middle East this week also includes visits to Jordan and Qatar.
