Germany wants to import gas and oil from Iraq

Germany is negotiating with Iraq the possibility of importing natural gas and oil, as the authorities in Berlin seek to diversify their energy sources to compensate for the reduction in Russian supplies of fossil fuels. The announcement was made on Friday by Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani, Reuters reports.

The administration in Baghdad has offered German companies opportunities to invest in the use of Iraq's natural gas and gas generated as a byproduct of oil production, the Iraqi official said, noting that his country wants to deliver gas to Europe through a pipeline which crosses Turkey.

Germany, which used to get 55 percent of its gas needs from Russia, has sought to diversify its LNG imports to avoid heavy reliance on just a few exporters, following deals with Qatar and the United States.
