Hamburg: Axe Attack in Euros Fan Zone

A major operation is underway in central Hamburg following a dramatic incident where a man wielding an axe threatened police officers.

German city officials confirmed the incident according to a BBC report. Police said they were forced to shoot the suspect, who sustained critical injuries and required immediate medical attention.

News reports indicate that the incident occurred near a designated fan zone for supporters of the Netherlands national football team. The Netherlands are scheduled to play Poland later today in the city as part of the European Championships.

A police statement revealed that the man threatened officers with a pickaxe and a suspected incendiary device. Reports suggest the attack happened around 12:30 pm local time on Reeperbahn, a well-known street and red-light district within the city.
