Hungary's Russia Visit Criticised as EU Backs Ukraine
The European Parliament reiterated its position on Wednesday through a resolution, emphasising the EU's commitment to providing unwavering support for Kyiv until victory is achieved.
According to a statement released by the European Parliament, this ongoing support is essential.
The document, approved by 495 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), calls on EU member states to uphold and strengthen their sanctions regime against Russia and Belarus. It further underscores the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation to assess the effectiveness and impact of these sanctions. The resolution also urges a systematic approach to address the issue of sanctions being dodged by companies headquartered within the EU, as well as by third parties and third countries.
Furthermore, MEPs strongly reaffirmed their belief that Russia has a financial obligation to compensate Ukraine for the devastating damages it has inflicted. In this context, the legislators called for the establishment of "a robust legal framework to enable the confiscation of frozen Russian state assets held by the EU."
The European Parliament also reiterated its stance on Ukraine's clear path towards NATO membership. The resolution urges the EU and its member states to significantly increase their military support for Ukraine, emphasising the need for this assistance to be provided in all necessary forms and for as long as it remains essential. Additionally, the MEPs called on the European Commission to propose a substantial long-term financial aid package to facilitate Ukraine's reconstruction efforts.
The resolution further condemned Russia's missile attack on the Okhmadyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv, labelling it a barbaric act. It also expressed strong disapproval of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's recent visit to the Russian Federation. The resolution emphasises that such a visit contradicts the EU's position and constitutes a serious breach of the bloc's treaties and established foreign policy. The text suggests that these actions by Hungary warrant consequences. Given the immediate occurrence of the missile attack on the children's hospital following the Hungarian Prime Minister's so-called "peace mission," the resolution concludes that Orbán's alleged peace efforts have proven ineffective.
