Moldova's EU Accession: Key Review of Justice Chapter

The Justice Chapter will be reviewed in the second session of bilateral screening, scheduled for the second half of September.

Vice Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov announced this on Radio Moldova's program "At 360 Degrees." According to Gherasimov, the Republic of Moldova has commenced the bilateral screening process with the cluster focusing on fundamental values.

"The next chapter to be reviewed in a bilateral screening session, where we will present national legislation to the European authorities, is Chapter 24, which addresses justice, security, and freedom. This chapter will be evaluated by colleagues from the European Commission in conjunction with our own institutions. We will continue the screening process with this second chapter in the latter half of September," said Cristina Gherasimov.

The Vice Prime Minister noted that a chapter in the bilateral screening could be presented within a single day or extend to five days.

"Negotiations will commence and conclude with the cluster focused on fundamental values, where justice reform plays a crucial role. We have agreed on the order with European Commission experts, though each cluster will be addressed sequentially. We start with the fundamental values cluster, then proceed to the internal market, and continue in this manner. A chapter's presentation can last from one day to five days, especially for more complex chapters such as agriculture or the environment," Gherasimov concluded.

Remember: On July 10, in Chișinău, the bilateral screening was launched, marking a new phase in communication with the European Union regarding the legislative and political preparation of local authorities.

In this stage of the accession negotiations, the Republic of Moldova's ability to meet the European Union's requirements will be assessed, representing a crucial step in the accession process. Implementation is expected to span one and a half years and cover 33 areas.

The screening began with the chapter on public procurement. This is the first instance where this stage is occurring in the candidate country seeking European Union accession, rather than in Brussels.
