Greece is facing an alarming water shortage
In the middle of the tourist season, several islands in Greece are facing an alarming lack of water due to the low rainfall in recent months, but also due to the lack of policies in the field to ensure the growing demand for water during the summer, reports Radio Romania News .
The worst problems are in the islands of the Cyclades archipelago, Leros, Sifnos, Naxos and Tinos, where a state of emergency has been declared due to a lack of water and measures have been taken to reduce consumption.
Thus, it was forbidden to fill private swimming pools, the taps at the showers on the beach were closed and the water was cut off for several hours a day.
Local authorities have advanced to install desalination units, and in other islands, to meet the basic needs of locals and tourists, water is brought in by special ships.
Other islands that have the same problems are: Crete, the island of Kefalonia in the Adriatic Sea and Thassos Island.
The Greek authorities are fighting against time to deal with the situation, given that the peak tourist season is in August and the demand will naturally be even higher. The government announced a project to solve the long-term problem, but this project will be implemented starting with September.
