Israel compares Erdogan to former dictator Saddam Hussein

Foreign Minister Israel Katz responds to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s threat to invade Israel, comparing him to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, writes The Times of Israel.

“Erdogan is going down the path of Saddam Hussein and threatens to attack Israel. He should just remember what happened there and how that ended,” writes Katz on X.

Saddam Hussein, who ruled Iraq with an iron fist for more than two decades, was executed by hanging in 2006 after being sentenced to death by Iraqi justice following the US invasion that toppled his dictatorial regime 3 years earlier.

The Israeli foreign minister's comments on Monday come after Erdogan threatened Israel with military intervention on Sunday, citing previous Turkish actions in Nagorno-Karabakh and Libya.

"Just like we entered Karabah, just like we entered Libya, we could do the same with them," Erdogan said at a Justice and Development Party (AKP) event in Rize, referring to Israel.

Erdogan recalled the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh under the conditions in which Turkey supported Azerbaijan with drones and other military equipment, but without directly intervening against Armenia.

Ankara also supports the internationally recognized government of Libya with military equipment and personnel.
