Great National Dictation: Thousands participate in Moldova

Over 1,800 people participated on August 31st, Romanian Language Day, in the Great National Dictation, a competition testing knowledge of the Romanian language, organised for the second consecutive year.

The event, held in the Great National Assembly Square, was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the Minister of Education, Dan Perciun. For the first time this year, the competition also took place in 15 district centres.

‘Happy Romanian Language Day. I'm delighted that so many people gathered today to honour the Romanian language in an event that is becoming a beautiful tradition on August 31st, the Great National Dictation. You lovers of the Romanian language, people of all ages, professions, from all over Moldova, understand the responsibility that comes with the word. (…) Today we celebrate the freedom and joy of living in our language. I thank you all for your care in speaking and writing correctly. The way we express ourselves shows how vast our minds and our world are. I wish you all the best in the Great National Dictation. Long live the Romanian Language,’ declared President Maia Sandu.

This year, the Great National Dictation attracted three times more participants eager to test their linguistic skills than in 2023. Those who achieve the best results in writing the dictation will be awarded in a public event, announced Minister of Education Dan Perciun in a special edition of Moldova 1. The official stated that the event, organised for the second time today, could become a traditional one.

‘Thank you for coming to honour the Romanian language together. We are over 1800, and the Great Dictation will be written today not only here in PMAN but also in 15 district centres. I am happy that we are celebrating this event together so beautifully. This day unites all of us who speak and feel Romanian. I wish you all the best in the dictation. Happy Romanian Language Day!,’ declared the Minister of Education.

The Great National Dictation is organised by the Ministry of Education and Research on the occasion of Romanian Language Day. In the 2023 edition, over 450 people participated in the dictation, of which five obtained a score of 10. Top participants were rewarded with diplomas, books, and vouchers by the Ministry.
