Moldova's millionaires: Significant growth and age diversity in 2023
Although we lag behind in revenue per capita, the number of millionaires in our country is increasing year by year.
The State Fiscal Service (SFS) reports that in 2023, there were 6,416 millionaires, an increase of 1,606 from the previous year. The youngest is 19 years old.
These figures are largely due to increased responsibility among citizens. The practice of receiving salaries "under the table" is decreasing, and more programs are being launched to support young entrepreneurs and start-ups.
Returning to the fiscal data, the more than 6,400 individuals with incomes exceeding one million lei reported a total income of nearly 20 billion lei. In this context, more than 3,900 citizens earned between one and two million lei, and more than 1,470 earned between two and four million lei. Nearly 740 individuals declared incomes between four and ten million lei. Additionally, 295 citizens reported incomes exceeding ten million lei.
The SFS report reveals significant age diversity among millionaires in the Republic of Moldova. The youngest individual in this category is 19 years old, while the oldest person with an income exceeding one million lei is 83 years old.
Data from the State Fiscal Service show that the main source of income for citizens remains salaries. Of the nearly 111.7 billion lei total, salaries accounted for more than 84.2 billion lei. A significant portion came from dividends, which are profits for shareholders in joint-stock companies. This amounts to nearly 13 billion lei. More than three billion lei came from bank interest, and over two billion lei from capital gains. The fiscal authority reports that last year, income tax withheld at source and declared amounted to 8.7 billion lei.
