EU boosts aid for Moldova amidst security concerns
Siegfried Mureșan, the President of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with Moldova and a negotiator on the EU budget, announced that he had submitted an amendment to the draft Union budget for the upcoming year.
This amendment requests a €61 million increase in allocations for the Eastern Neighborhood, which includes the Republic of Moldova.
He stated, "The Republic of Moldova is a candidate for accession to the European Union, and we must assist them in modernising and reforming during the accession process."
Mureșan further emphasised that the Republic of Moldova faces ongoing security threats from the Russian Federation. Consequently, the EU must ensure that Moldova and the entire Eastern Neighborhood receive adequate support to address these threats. The European official concluded by stating that the security of the European Union is contingent upon the security of its neighbouring countries.
The European Union's budget for 2025 is set to be negotiated between the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission, with the goal of adoption by the end of this year.
It is also worth noting that Mureșan, who served as a negotiator for the current EU budget, was recently appointed as the European Parliament's chief negotiator for the future EU Multiannual Budget. These funds, which will become available starting in 2028, amount to €1.3 trillion and will be allocated to EU member states as well as candidate countries for EU accession, including Moldova.
