UN envoy condemns Israeli airstrikes in Gaza’s Beit Lahiya

The UN peace envoy for the Middle East condemned the ongoing attacks on civilians on Sunday, following Israeli airstrikes in Beit Lahiya, Gaza, that killed dozens of people Saturday evening, Reuters reports.

“These follow weeks of intensified operations that have resulted in dozens of civilian casualties and an almost total lack of humanitarian aid reaching the populations in the north,” stated Tor Wennesland, the UN coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East.

The Israeli army has intensified its attacks in northern Gaza since early October to prevent the regrouping of Hamas militants.

A total of 87 people have been declared dead or missing under the rubble following an Israeli attack on Saturday in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, the enclave’s Health Ministry stated on Sunday.

The Israeli army is investigating the reports regarding the incident, which recorded one of the highest casualty tolls in recent months.

The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that the attacks have killed hundreds of people since the Israeli campaign intensified.
