Number of Ukrainian students who study in schools in the Republic of Moldova on a rise

The number of Ukrainian refugee children who continue their studies in gymnasiums and lyceums in the Republic of Moldova is constantly increasing and has reached 2,400 students this year, compared to 1,600 last year. A higher number of refugees from the neighboring country and citizens of the Republic of Moldova of Ukrainian ethnicity want to learn in the Ukrainian language, claim representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research.

Out of the 287 students of the Russian-Ukrainian Lyceum "Taras Şevcenko" in Chisinau, 214 are refugee children from Ukraine, director Angela Moizesovici told Radio Moldova. According to her, in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th grades, all subjects are taught in the Ukrainian language.

"They come to school every day, they all learn Romanian. Students who have just arrived learn level one from scratch. Moreover, we have extra school lessons and our teacher teaches Romanian language classes for refugees", said Angela Moizesovici.

Currently, 1,786 refugee children from Ukraine are studying in the schools from Chisinau, by 9 students more compared to the previous week, said the deputy-mayor of Chisinau, Angela Cutasevici.

"We have almost 400 integrated children in kindergartens. In the current academic year, the number of refugee children who are enrolled in educational institutions has doubled compared to the end of 2023-2024".

Starting from September 1, 2025, at the "Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu" Theoretical Lyceum in Bălți, classes with teaching in the Ukrainian language and with the compulsory study of the Romanian language will be opened, the head of the political service in the field of inter-ethnic relations from the Ministry of Education and Research, Ivan Duminica told Radio Moldova. He claims that both ethnic Ukrainian children from the Republic of Moldova and refugees from Ukraine will study at this educational institution.

"It is like a response to the request of the Ukrainian parents, because we, the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research talk with the parents, with the refugees and often receive these requests. For example, the "Taras Shevchenko" Gymnasium in Chisinau received a lot of requests from Ukrainian refugees", said Ivan Duminica.

We remind that, currently, in 229 gymnasiums and lyceums in the Republic of Moldova, about 2,400 refugee children from Ukraine are enrolled, by about 800 students more than last year, 99 young refugees are studying in vocational education institutions, and 211 Ukrainian students with temporary protection or foreign student status are studying in universities.
