Moldova plants the seeds of a greener future

As the national afforestation campaign nears, tree nurseries across the country are buzzing with activity. With just a week to go, workers are making final preparations to ensure that millions of seedlings are ready for planting.

This autumn, over 26 million trees will be planted on 4,000 hectares of land.

Despite facing challenges such as drought and labour shortages, the Sărăteni nursery in Telenești district has exceeded expectations, producing over 3.5 million seedlings. The installation of an irrigation system has been crucial in mitigating the impact of the dry weather, according to nursery head Oleg Crivolap. The nursery spans over 60 hectares and cultivates a variety of tree species.

"We are currently producing seedlings for various enterprises and planting projects," Crivolap explained. "Our nursery supplies seedlings to regions like Plaiul Fagului, the Lower Prut, the Telenești enterprise, and numerous forestry districts."

In the southern region, the Comrat forest nursery is also actively preparing for the planting season. Workers like Svetlana Odagiu, a 20-year veteran, have been diligently tending to seedlings throughout the year.

"We've been working here for over 20 years," Odagiu said. "We sow seeds in the spring and continue working throughout the autumn. Every tree we grow contributes to a healthier environment."

The national afforestation campaign will officially commence on November 16th in Mălăiești, Orhei district. Government officials will lead the planting of 40 hectares of forest. Citizens interested in participating can register on the Moldsilva Agency website. Victor Durbală, director of the agency, anticipates a significant turnout of around 6-7 thousand people.

"We aim to plant over 4,000 hectares this year, including 3,300 hectares on lands belonging to local public administrations and 1,100 hectares in the forest fund," Durbală stated. "We have over 26,000 seedlings ready for planting, including oak, locust, ash, sycamore, and field maple. All seedlings are cultivated in our own nurseries."

Currently, the national forest fund covers over 450,000 hectares, representing 12% of the country's territory. The National Afforestation Program, launched in 2023, sets an ambitious goal of expanding the forest cover by an additional 150,000 hectares over the next decade.
