Breaking barriers: Roma students achieve academic success

To encourage further academic pursuits and inspire others, top-performing Roma students in Moldova are receiving merit-based scholarships.

Felicia Bludoi, a talented student from Comrat, is among the 120 Roma students awarded these scholarships. She is concurrently pursuing degrees in Law at Comrat State University and National Culture at the Ion Creangă Pedagogical University of Chisinau. Bludoi attributes her academic drive to her parents' unwavering support and encouragement.

"My parents, who lacked the opportunity to attend university, always encouraged me to pursue higher education. My two brothers have also completed high school. I dedicate significant time to my studies, often late into the night. I believe that academic excellence is essential for personal and professional growth," she stated.

The 1,200 lei (66,96 euro) monthly scholarship provides valuable financial support for Bludoi's academic endeavours. This stipend enables her to cover tuition fees and other related expenses. She aspires to become a teacher and a lawyer, specifically advocating for the rights of the Roma community.

"While the scholarship amount is modest, it offers substantial assistance in meeting my university expenses. I am passionate about teaching and working with children. Additionally, I aim to pursue a career in law to champion the rights of the Roma people, who have historically faced discrimination. I believe that everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, deserves equal rights and opportunities," Bludoi emphasised.

In September, the Ministry of Education and Research, in collaboration with the Agency for Interethnic Relations, launched a merit scholarship program for Roma students enrolled in secondary, vocational, and higher education. For the 2024-2025 academic year, these students will receive a monthly scholarship of 1,200 lei.
