Moldova toughens environmental laws to combat pollution
Individuals and businesses that harm the environment through their activities will be held accountable for the damage caused and must actively participate in ecological restoration efforts.
The newly approved legislation mandates that polluters bear the financial and operational burden of repairing environmental damage. This measure aims to mitigate negative environmental impacts and slow the pace of climate change.
Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "The 'polluter pays' principle will be strictly enforced. By holding individuals and businesses responsible for their actions, we can effectively protect our environment and safeguard future generations."
To ensure effective implementation, the Environmental Protection Inspectorate will be responsible for identifying responsible parties and assessing the extent of damage. The Environmental Agency will take proactive measures to prevent environmental harm and evaluate the significance of any damage that occurs.
Local businesses have expressed support for the new regulations, recognizing the importance of environmental responsibility. Irina Ilcenco, the administrator of a textile company, highlighted the need for accountability: "Those who pollute should be held responsible for their actions. We must prioritise environmental protection and sustainable practices."
In recent years, environmental pollution has reached alarming levels in Moldova. The National Public Health Agency reports that air pollution contributes to over 11% of deaths annually, a staggering figure of approximately 4,500 lives lost. By implementing stricter regulations and enforcing the "polluter pays" principle, Moldova aims to address these pressing environmental challenges and create a healthier future for its citizens.
