Vienna's magical Christmas Market
Vienna's winter festivities have kicked off with the illumination of a giant 30-metre Christmas tree in front of City Hall.
Vienna's famous Christmas market draws millions of visitors annually, who come to wander around, admire the stalls, and sip on mulled wine, as reported by Euronews.
"We love wandering around, admiring the stalls, and sipping on mulled wine. We came here specifically for this," said one visitor.
"I especially like the mulled wine, which I think is called 'boiled must' here. Being from Germany, there's a bit of a language barrier. But yes, white mulled wine, and hopefully we can grab some hotdogs later," shared another.
"I think my husband really loves the souvenir mug, and it's so much fun to sample the different foods. We also can't wait to try ice skating," said a visitor.
This year, the city has drawn attention by adorning the tree with 2,000 LED lights and organising a thousand Christmas balls – a first in the history of the City Hall Christmas Market. The 80-year-old tree was brought from the province and stands at a height of 30 metres. Since 1959, a different province has donated a spruce to the capital for its largest Christmas market every year.
"This market has been ranked as one of the most beautiful Christmas markets by The Economist and The New York Times. I am very happy that many Viennese, many visitors from Austria and abroad have come here to witness the lighting of this wonderful tree," said Michael Ludwig, Mayor of Vienna.
In 2023, the market in the heart of Vienna attracted 3.3 million visitors from around the world.
