Moldovan university boosts faculty's English skills

20 professors from the Moldovan State University of Economics and Business (ASEM) have received Cambridge English Language Certificates.

This significant achievement demonstrates their commitment to academic excellence and professional development.

Lica Erhan and Olga Chicu, two of the professors, have gained international recognition for their advanced language skills and high-level qualifications.

Lica Erhan, who has been coordinating English-language groups at ASEM for a decade, inherited her passion for teaching from her family of educators. To achieve a high level of English proficiency, she dedicated herself to her studies, obtaining a C1 level. This Cambridge certificate, she believes, will open up new opportunities for her.

"I anticipate that this certificate will provide me with future opportunities, as there is a growing demand for mobility. While subject matter expertise is important, today's students expect high levels of English language proficiency. It's crucial to impress them with fluent and accurate language use within the first few minutes of class," said Lica Erhan, a university lecturer.

Olga Chicu, a pro-dean at the Faculty of Information Technologies, also successfully obtained the prestigious certificate. Despite limited preparation time, she found the exams manageable.

"I'm proud of this achievement. It's been a while since I've taken exams as a student. While the exams were nerve-wracking, I was confident in my ability to pass. Such a certificate is invaluable for project applications and mobility programs, as it guarantees the necessary language proficiency," said Olga Chicu.

Students appreciate the language skills of their professors:

"It's essential for teachers to qualify and demonstrate their English language skills."

"A teacher certification benefits both students and teachers. It enhances classroom dynamics and fosters better English language interaction. While English-language groups are typically smaller, this certification will encourage more students to enrol in these programs."

ASEM offers four bachelor's programs taught entirely in English. The university has organised certification programs for 25 faculty members, with 20 successfully completing the C1 and B2 levels, and some even achieving the C2 level. ASEM aims to continue these initiatives and provide more extensive training for faculty members at lower proficiency levels.

Currently, 63 professors at ASEM teach in English, and there are 14 English-language academic groups with a total of 382 students.
