Winter storm hits Moldova: Roads closed, travel disrupted
Late November brought snowfall, leading road maintenance crews to work through the night to ensure safe winter driving conditions on national roads in the northern and central parts of the country.
Meanwhile, police reported that due to the weather, trucks were having difficulty on the M5 highway near Bravicea village in Călărași district. One lane was currently blocked, and officers were on the scene assisting drivers.
Near Florițoaia Veche village in Ungheni district, a car carrying two minors skidded off the road. Specialised teams were called to the scene to handle the situation. No one was injured. Rescuers managed to tow the vehicle and clear the road.
According to the State Road Administration (SRA), maintenance crews worked throughout the night on patrol, snow removal, and combating slipperiness in areas such as Bălți, Fălești, Sîngerei, Briceni, Dondușeni, Ocnița, Drochia, Glodeni, Edineț, Rîșcani, Soroca, Șoldănești, Călărași, Strășeni, Ungheni, and others.
Approximately 50 specialised vehicles and 48 road workers were involved in the operations. To combat slipperiness, 7.6 tons of manual anti-skid material and over 224 tons of technical salt were distributed.
The SRA stated that crews remained mobilised in the field and continued to work to maintain safe driving conditions.
In light of the snowfall, drivers were urged to equip their vehicles with winter tires, avoid travelling without proper vehicle equipment, drive cautiously, and adjust their speed to the weather and road conditions.
