Moldova's Socialists demand government change amid crisis

The Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) announced on November 29 that it was initiating a vote of no-confidence against the government led by Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The Socialists believe that the current Cabinet of Ministers is responsible for deepening an ongoing "crisis" in the energy sector and accuse it of "disastrous policies" and an "inability" to implement effective measures to protect citizens and the economy.

"PSRM has prepared all necessary documents and is initiating the process to remove the government. We are also convinced that the current crisis cannot be resolved without a political system reset. In this regard, the Socialist Party emphasizes the need to hold early parliamentary elections as soon as possible. Only a new leadership, one that has the trust of the people, will be able to restore stability and ensure sustainable development."

The Socialists are calling on all members of parliament, regardless of their political party, to support the initiative.

The PSRM announcement comes just over an hour before the National Energy Regulatory Agency is scheduled to meet to decide on raising natural gas prices by nearly four lei, at the request of Moldovagaz.

A motion of no-confidence against the government can be initiated by at least one-quarter of the elected deputies. The motion is passed with the vote of the majority of deputies present. In the current parliament, 62 deputies represent the ruling party faction, Action and Solidarity; 29 represent the Communist and Socialist Bloc. Nine other parliamentarians, who gained entry to Parliament via the PAS, BCS, or the now-declared unconstitutional Șor party lists, are currently registered as unaffiliated or independent deputies.
