Correspondence of Dan Alexe // Zelenski in Brussels for a NATO peacekeeping force in Ukraine
Several European leaders are scheduled to meet on the evening of Wednesday, December 18, in Brussels, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The main topic of discussion will be the potential deployment of NATO peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, marking a significant shift in attitude from Europe and NATO. European leaders are anxiously awaiting the outcome of a potential agreement between Vladimir Putin and the incoming U.S. President, Donald Trump.
Invited participants at this meeting include German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish President Andrzej Duda, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may also attend.
Establishing a European military presence on Ukrainian soil could serve as a deterrent to the Russians, who would risk a direct conflict with NATO member states if they proceeded with their aggression. Additionally, it could provide a testing ground for the future development of a European armed force.
However, sending European soldiers to Ukraine could strengthen the propaganda of the far-right, which is sympathetic to Moscow and would view this as an act of hostility towards Russia. Such a decision would be particularly challenging to accept in countries where far-right movements are gaining traction.
The meeting is being held on the sidelines of an EU-Western Balkans summit taking place earlier on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Romania is notably absent from these discussions amid a political crisis. The reality is that Romania, where security services are struggling to combat Russian propaganda, no longer appears to have the trust of its Western partners.
Although Wednesday's meeting is not expected to produce concrete decisions, it serves as a political forum that will lead to ongoing discussions and calculations in the weeks and months ahead.
