Christians celebrate the Christmas in the new style
Today, December 25, Christians celebrate the Christmas in the new style, according to the Gregorian calendar. In some localities in the Republic of Moldova, Christmas is celebrated in the old style, on January 7, according to the Julian calendar. In recent years, Moldovans have celebrated Christmas in both the new and old styles, and the days of December 25 and January 7 are marked in red on the calendar.
The Christmas holiday marks Christ's birth about two thousand years ago. It is one of the most important holidays for Christians. Christmas traditions and customs differ depending on the geographical area of the country.
Early in the morning, citizens go to church to attend the Christmas holy liturgy, then, during the day, they wait for their relatives for a festive meal.
December 25 is declared a non-working holiday by law, starting with 2013.
Most inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova celebrate Christmas in the old style on January 7, which is also a non-working day.
