Moldova gets €151M EU aid to lower electricity bills

Electricity bills were lower this winter due to subsidies provided by the European Union.

According to a statement from the European Union Delegation in Chișinău, €151 million from the total €310 million package was allocated for this purpose.

The funds were directly allocated to the state budget as a non-repayable grant. The European Union supports the Republic of Moldova, helping its citizens manage the high costs resulting from Russian energy coercion, the statement added.

In early February, the European Commission and the Republic of Moldova reached an agreement on a comprehensive two-year strategy to strengthen Moldova’s energy independence and resilience. The strategy aims to eliminate Moldova’s reliance on Russian natural gas and electricity supplied by the Cuciurgan power plant while fully integrating the country into the European energy system.

Under this strategy, EU support for Moldova is expected to reach €250 million in 2025. Additionally, the European Union is allocating €15 million to support energy costs for agribusinesses and manufacturing companies. Another €50 million will be available for investments in energy efficiency projects led by local governments, households, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

All citizens will receive electricity subsidies with EU support until December 2025, whether or not they have registered on the government platform compensatii.gov.md. These subsidies will cover the difference between the regulated price and the reference price, up to a maximum of 1.84 lei/kWh, for a consumption limit of 110 kWh per month per household.
