The 10th EU economic sanctions package against Russia to be imposed by 24 February
The 10th package of economic sanctions against the Russian Federation will enter into force by 24 February, the one-year anniversary of the start of the war, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed in Kiev on Friday.
Ukraine's President Volodimir Zelenski meanwhile called on the European bloc to increase financial pressure on the Kremlin, warning that Russia is preparing a new military offensive in the east, while the European Commission replied that experts are trying to find legal ways to allow the seizure of Russian-held assets that were frozen in previous sanctions packages.
This includes billions of euros worth of foreign exchange reserves held by the Russian central bank, and the additional funds raised through confiscation are intended to finance Ukraine's reconstruction, which the European Commission estimates will be worth at least 600 billion euros.
Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen also announced 150 million euros in aid to buy vital energy equipment for Ukraine, send 2,400 power generators and a 10 million euro grant for childcare.
