New mobile scanner strengthens security at the Moldova–Ukraine border

A modern mobile scanner was deployed at the Tudora Customs Post. This investment, supported by the US and the Government of Moldova, aims to enhance border security and combat illicit trafficking.

The Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova inaugurated a high-performance mobile scanner at the Tudora Customs Post on Thursday. This equipment is designed for the non-intrusive inspection of vehicles. According to the Customs Service, this system represents "a strategic investment in national and regional security." The acquisition was made possible through co-financing from the governments of the United States of America and the Republic of Moldova.
In a press release, the institution stated that "the new scanning system is more than just a technical acquisition; it is a vital operational capability that enhances border protection, aids in the fight against illicit trafficking, and addresses the increased security needs" in the context of the regional instability caused by the war in Ukraine. The source highlights that modernizing technology and strengthening control mechanisms are ongoing priorities aimed at safeguarding the state’s economic interests and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Radu Vrabie, the Director of the Customs Service, noted in the press release that the provision of such equipment is "a direct investment in the security of the Republic of Moldova and in the resilience of its borders." He explained that "the efficiency of non-intrusive inspections is crucial for detecting risks and hidden goods, as well as for facilitating legal trade." He also expressed gratitude to the United States for its "constant support" and to other international partners for their key contributions to the modernization of the institution.
The inauguration event was attended by representatives from the US Embassy, the manufacturing company, and national authorities. Following the official ceremony, participants were given demonstrations of the scanner's functionalities and the operations at the Tudora Customs Post.
The new system became operational after a comprehensive process spanning 2023 to 2025, which included international selection procedures, technical inspections, installation, testing, and personnel training.

With this advanced technological equipment, the Republic of Moldova is making significant progress in aligning with international customs control standards, enhancing border security, and facilitating legitimate trade.
