Greece travel alert: Farmers block motorways, affecting travelers and freight transport

Moldovan citizens who are in, transiting through, or intending to travel to Greece are warned that the ongoing Greek farmers protest could cause significant disruption to road traffic in the coming days.

According to a Greece travel alert issued by the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the Hellenic Republic, the demonstrations are escalating and may lead to the blocking of national roads and motorways, including key routes connecting to the border crossing points in Northern Greece.

The Embassy specifies that the situation is fluid, with blockades appearing or changing at short notice.

Consequently, citizens are urged to strictly adhere to the recommendations of the Greek authorities and utilize alternative routes indicated locally. Authorities in Athens recommend prudence and careful route planning, especially in access areas towards the northern borders.

For consular assistance, Moldovan citizens can contact the diplomatic mission directly at: (+30) 210 699 03 72 or (+30) 698 470 2421. Email contact: [email protected] and [email protected].

In Greece, farmers have blocked several major motorways and border crossings. The central road corridor between Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as the border points to Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Turkey, and Albania, have all been affected. These highway blockades have caused significant delays for international freight transport.

The protesters’ core grievances stem from months-long delays in subsidy payments, which were suspended amid an ongoing corruption investigation.

They are also outraged by rising production costs and are demanding fair market prices for their goods.

In response, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has declared his openness to negotiations. He stated that payments to farmers for this year will be over 500 million euros higher than in 2024.
