Pap test offered free nationwide as 160 women die from cervical cancer

In the Republic of Moldova, a staggering 160 women die every year due to cervical cancer. Doctors are issuing a stern warning: the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of over 100 viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes, transmitting primarily through intimate contact.

Crucially, some of these strains are highly dangerous and can lead to the development of various cancer forms, particularly cervical cancer.

Gynecologist Nadejda Vetricean, speaking to Radio Moldova journalist Galina Alcaz, stated: "Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus. If not detected early, this viral involvement in the human body can progress to cancer. Scientists have shown that the Pap test is the most effective method, and it is currently offered free of charge nationwide for all women."

It remains a profound concern that over 160 deaths among women of reproductive age are registered annually, even though the Pap test for screening is provided at no cost in the country. The Pap test is a crucial, non-invasive method involving the collection of a sample from the uterine cervix, making it instrumental in the prevention of cervical cancer.

"This test is designed to prevent the disease's progression. We recommend three-year monitoring; a low-grade lesion can be detected first, which may then progress to a high-grade lesion. Our approach varies based on the case," Vetricean explained. "It is truly regrettable that young women are dying from cervical cancer in our modern era, especially with free screening available."

She added that 85% of women experience spontaneous self-cure. The virus is a foreign protein that briefly uses the organism as a host to multiply before leaving. "However, these 5-7% of all infected individuals have certain predispositions. Do not skip your free Pap test appointment," Nadejda Vetricean concluded.
