Foreign Minister Popsoi confirms Moldova’s exit from CIS agreements is headed to Parliament

Moldova is officially finalizing its withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The legal documents required to terminate the founding agreements are currently undergoing final review and will soon reach Parliament for ratification.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popsoi, announced the move during a broadcast on Radio Moldova on January 19. The decision marks a definitive shift in the country's foreign policy as it pivots toward European integration.

Legal and institutional steps

The termination of these international treaties is undergoing a structured inter-institutional approval process. According to Minister Popsoi, the documentation is being prepared to ensure a clean legal break from the Moscow-led organization.

Once the review phase is complete, the legislative body will vote to formalize the exit. This move follows a series of steps taken by Chisinau to distance itself from CIS structures following the regional geopolitical shifts.

Strategic realignment

The Foreign Minister emphasized that the process is moving swiftly toward its conclusion. This withdrawal aligns with Moldova's broader objective of achieving full membership in the European Union.

By repealing these agreements, Moldova removes the final institutional layers connecting it to the post-Soviet framework. Government officials expect the parliamentary vote to proceed without significant delays.
