Josep Borell: "Ukraine was able to withstand a year, but the European Union must do more and quickly"
If the Ukrainians resist, the European Union must help them - this is one of the conclusions expressed in an interview for the Ukraine office of Free Europe, by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. According to the official, military assistance to Ukraine must continue, but with caution, so that the European Union and the West do not become parties to the conflict.
"Nobody expected Ukraine to resist in such a way. Putin was confident that in a few weeks they would be in Kiev. Certainly many of Ukraine's friends did not believe that Ukraine would resist, but the Russian army turned out to be not so brave and ready to defend their country. From the very first moment, I believed that only imposing economic sanctions would not be enough. It is necessary to do something else, which is to provide military assistance, and thanks to this military assistance, Ukraine was able to resist for a year, but the European Union must do more and faster, provide economic, technical, military support, humanitarian aid, to train Ukrainian soldiers," the official said. Joseph Borell also stated that he respects the UN Charter which is based on the territorial integrity of all states within internationally recognized borders.
