Prime Minister Munteanu declares national solidarity amid disruptive winter storms
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has announced emergency measures across Moldova as the country grapples with severe winter weather and hazardous road conditions.
Under the new directives, the workday and school hours will begin at 9:00 AM this week. Heads of institutions are instructed to shift employees to remote work wherever possible to minimize travel risks.
National emergency response
The state has mobilized 115 specialized vehicles to distribute over 1,075 tons of technical salt and 300 tons of anti-skid material. Additionally, 319 emergency responders and 91 vehicles from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) are actively mitigating storm impacts.
Prime Minister Munteanu issued a call for solidarity on social media, thanking rescue teams, road workers, and medical staff. He urged citizens to check on vulnerable neighbors and follow official safety recommendations.
Impact on health and infrastructure
The winter blast has placed a significant strain on the healthcare system. Over 2,700 individuals requested urgent medical aid, resulting in 1,200 hospitalizations, including 263 children.
Electricity remains unstable in several regions. In Central and Southern Moldova, Premier Energy reports 4,457 users affected, while RED-Nord reports over 16,400 users experiencing unscheduled outages in the northern districts.
Education and military support
The education sector has shifted to a hybrid model. Currently, 265 schools are operating entirely online, while 614 maintain physical presence. Other institutions will reschedule classes once conditions improve.
The National Army and IGSU are prepared to assist local authorities in the hardest-hit areas. Weather alerts for ice and frost remain in effect, and officials advise against non-essential travel.
