“I feared for my family” — IGP chief targeted in 2024 attack

Chief of the General Police Inspectorate, Viorel Cernăuțeanu, was the target of an assassination attempt in 2024. He spoke about this episode in an interview, where he revealed that the threats also targeted his family.

Cernăuțeanu stated that, in the same case, the deputy chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, Pavel Postica, was also targeted. He says he learned about the risks from operational memos and special investigative measures.

“I was afraid for my family in 2024, when I was the subject of an assassination attempt. (..) You can well imagine that I have two children I have to take care of. And they bear no responsibility for everything I do. They mind their own lives, but at the same time, the criminal tries to drag you into these dirty games in order to make you suffer sometimes through your loved ones,” said the head of the GPI in an interview for the portal “Cu sens”.

According to him, the persons involved in this case have been detained, but he cannot say that the danger has completely disappeared. “To believe there is no potential risk would be saying too much,” Cernăuțeanu stressed.

Viorel Cernăuțeanu has been working within the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) since the age of 25. In January 2022, by order of Ana Revenco, the Minister of Internal Affairs in the Government sworn in in August 2021, formed by the Party of Action and Solidarity, Viorel Cernăuțeanu was appointed Secretary of State of the MAI. A month later he was appointed head of the General Police Inspectorate, a position he still holds to this day.
