Moscow criticises Moldova's parliamentary statement condemning Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine
Moscow has come up with an official reaction after Moldovan MPs today, 2 March, adopted a statement condemning Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Maria Zaharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, says the parliamentarians are thus agreeing with the West's "most odious" statements.
"On 2 March, the Moldovan parliament voted for an anti-Russian resolution drafted in the spirit of similar oppositions that have been issued earlier in European and Euro-Atlantic structures and in individual EU and NATO countries. Thus, the deputies agreed with the most odious statements of their Western curators," reads Maria Zaharova's commentary published on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
At the same time, Russia accuses Chisinau of having been complicit in organising the protest outside the Russian Embassy in Moldova on 24 February, and criticises the statements made by the country's leadership a year after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Maria Zaharova says that Chisinau's statements contributed to the "escalation of Russophobic feelings".
"Meanwhile, the tension around the Transnistrian issue is artificially inflamed. Chisinau turns a blind eye to the Kiev regime's attempts to undermine the situation in the region. (...) In this regard, we call once again on the Moldovan authorities to stop the unfounded anti-Russian confrontational rhetoric and to show restraint regarding the situation in Transnistria. We reaffirm our readiness to develop constructive pragmatic cooperation with Chisinau and to continue our efforts to resolve the Transnistrian problem," the Russian MFA statement said.
The Moldovan authorities have not yet provided an official reaction to Moscow's statements.
The Moldovan Parliament today officially condemned the brutality of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine. The deputies in Chisinau adopted a declaration to this effect with 55 votes from the PAS faction. The MPs call on the Russian Federation to "immediately cease military activities in Ukraine and unconditionally withdraw all military forces and equipment from the entire internationally recognised territory of Ukraine". The Moldovan authorities at the same time support the efforts of the community of democratic states to establish a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and confirm the readiness of the Moldovan authorities to continue to provide humanitarian assistance and aid to the people of Ukraine who are seeking refuge from the war.
