Post-June 30, gas uncertainty for Transnistrian region

The gas supply to the Transnistrian region is currently provided by Moldovagaz until June 30, 2026, pursuant to a decision by the National Energy Regulatory Agency. After this date, the future delivery mechanism is uncertain. In light of this, the authorities in Chisinau are considering several scenarios, according to Valeriu Chiveri, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration.
According to Chiveri, one option being considered is to extend the current model; however, an alternative approach is also being explored to make the system more transparent and predictable.
“One option is to extend this model, while another is to gradually transition to a transparent model in which payments, over time, would align with market prices. This would be relatively complicated for citizens on the left bank of the Nistru, especially considering that the last 30 years have favored them, while we on the right bank have faced significant challenges,” the deputy prime minister stated during a program on Jurnal TV.
He also emphasized that the current mechanism remains fragile and reliant on external factors.
The authorities in Chisinau are considering potential compensation for vulnerable consumers in the region, but implementing these programs hinges on establishing a convergence fund to support the reintegration process.
“As long as we do not have this operational fund, it is difficult for us to contemplate certain compensation programs,” Chiveri added.
We remind you that, on March 4, at the request of the Ministry of Energy in Chisinau, the National Energy Regulatory Agency decided that Moldovagaz should continue supplying natural gas to the Transnistrian region until the end of June 2026 to maintain the existing operational and contractual supply mechanisms.
Since February 2025, gas for the Transnistrian region has been delivered through a scheme facilitated by the Russian Federation, involving several companies registered in the United Arab Emirates and the Hungarian company MET. This arrangement allows the gas to reach Moldovagaz, which the National Energy Regulatory Agency has designated as the supplier responsible for providing gas to the region.
