National Bank of Moldova: MIA transactions exceed 13.2B lei in 2025

The MIA instant payment system, launched two years ago, is currently used by almost 1 million people, representing approximately 50% of the Republic of Moldova's adult population. The data was presented by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), during an event dedicated to the evolution of digital payments, organized on April 9.

According to the institution, in 2025 alone, the MIA Instant Payments system processed approximately 15 million transactions, totaling 13.2 billion lei. These figures indicate a significant shift in consumer behavior and payment preferences among the population.

“The MIA Instant Payments system is not just a technical solution; it is an engine for modernizing the entire national economy. Its success hinges on our collective ability—the BNM and payment service providers—to deliver a simple and intuitive user experience to citizens. With this product, we have eliminated barriers to digitalization, transforming MIA into an indispensable tool that reduces reliance on cash and provides tangible benefits to both consumers and the business environment,” said Petru Rotaru, the First Deputy Governor of the BNM. He spoke at the event titled "Development of Instant Payments in the Republic of Moldova: Adoption, Trust, and Ecosystem Priorities," which brought together payment service providers, financial institutions, and industry experts.

The MIA Instant Payment System, developed by the National Bank of Moldova, was launched in March 2024. This system enables users to complete transfers in seconds through internet or mobile banking applications, irrespective of the payment service providers' schedules.

The system has evolved to include business-to-business (B2B) payments, which were introduced on July 31, 2024. Payments to public institutions (P2G) followed on July 31, 2025.

On March 2, 2026, the MIA system was further expanded to facilitate instant transfers between legal entities (B2B). Companies can now initiate and receive payments in Moldovan lei 24/7, with real-time settlement, even outside of traditional financial institutions' operating hours.

For legal entities, transfers can be used to pay invoices, make advances, or cover other commercial transactions. The commission charged for these transfers is 0.7% of the transfer amount, with a maximum fee of 40 lei per transaction.
