Moldovan delegation in Washington secures strategic support for energy and Ukraine reconstruction

A high-level Moldovan parliamentary delegation, led by Radu Marian, concluded a series of strategic meetings in Washington D.C. this week. The mission focused on reinforcing bilateral ties with the U.S. Congress to counter Russian hybrid influence and accelerate Moldova’s integration into the democratic community.

Strengthening economic and energy security

The discussions, which included MPs Adrian Baluțel and Andrian Cheptonar, centered on three pillars: national security, economic growth, and energy independence. A key highlight was the recent decision by Chișinău to lift duties on most U.S. imports, a move designed to grant local businesses seamless access to American technology.

U.S. officials welcomed the tariff removal, noting that Moldova now benefits from some of the lowest reciprocal trade barriers. Furthermore, the delegation highlighted the $130 million (approx. €122 million) U.S. investment in Moldova’s energy sector. This funding facilitates the construction of the Strășeni-Gutinaș power line by an American firm, drastically reducing dependence on unstable regional grids.

A gateway for Ukraine’s reconstruction

Radu Marian, Chairman of the Committee for Economy, Budget, and Finance, positioned Moldova as a primary logistics hub for U.S. investors aiming to support Ukraine’s post-war recovery. The delegation emphasized that Moldova’s stability and geographic proximity make it an ideal base for reconstruction efforts.

Beyond the Capitol, the lawmakers participated in the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings. Moldova’s economic interests were further represented at these forums by National Bank Governor Anca Dragu and the Minister of Finance, Andrian Gavriliță, focusing on global economic stability and fiscal resilience.
