UN Committee Against Torture secures unanimous backing for Ana Racu as Vice-Chair

The United Nations Committee Against Torture (CAT) unanimously elected Ana Racu as its Vice-Chairperson during its session on April 13, 2026.

The decision, announced by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations in Geneva, marks a significant milestone for Moldovan diplomacy in the human rights sector.

A legacy of human rights advocacy

The appointment recognizes Racu’s extensive career in preventing torture and ill-treatment. With over 25 years of professional experience, she has led critical efforts in monitoring custodial settings and promoting penitentiary reforms.

Her background includes high-level roles in combating violence and developing alternatives to detention at both national and international levels. This election solidifies her standing as a leading expert in the global human rights framework.

Institutional continuity and expertise

Racu has served as a member of the UN CAT since 2016. Previously, she represented the Republic of Moldova within the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).

The UN Committee Against Torture comprises 10 independent experts. Its primary mandate is to monitor state compliance with the Convention against Torture, ensuring international legal standards are upheld globally.

According to the Moldovan Mission in Geneva, this leadership role reconfirms Chisinau’s expertise and professional commitment to protecting fundamental human rights on the world stage.
