Ungheni holds emotional tribute to victims of the organized famine

The ceremony commemorating the victims of the 1946–1947 famine took place in Ungheni and was filled with tears and strong emotions. Local authorities and community members gathered to honor the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives during this tragic period.

The event featured an artistic performance by young actors from the Ungheni Theater Studio at the Palace of Culture, who recreated the dramatic atmosphere of that historical period. The performance had a strong emotional impact on the audience, prompting them to reflect on the population's suffering.
Vitalie Vrabie, the mayor of Ungheni, emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory.
"Those who are unaware of their history and do not know the truth about what happened remain vulnerable and risk facing difficult and dramatic times again. Our mission is to honor the memory of those who suffered—our grandparents, great-grandparents, and parents. Let us not forget,” the mayor urged.

Vitalie Vrabie shared a personal memory from that time, recounting his mother's childhood experience during a severe famine. She faced great danger but survived thanks to her parents' care.
To honour the victims of the organised famine, participants laid flowers at the Troița Martirilor Neamului. They observed a moment of silence in which words seemed unnecessary.

We remind you that, annually, on the third Saturday of April, the victims of the famine of 1946–1947 are commemorated. This year marks 80 years since the beginning of that tragedy, considered one of the most painful pages in the nation's history.
