Romania faces a severe political crisis after the Social Democratic Party (PSD) officially withdrew its support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. While the move does not automatically dissolve the government, it signals a definitive rupture within the ruling coalition.

Prime Minister Bolojan has refused to resign, accusing his coalition partners of "duplicitous maneuvering." Meanwhile, President Nicușor Dan warned that the country is entering a period of "political turbulence" that could threaten Romania’s pro-Western trajectory.

The conflict escalated after an internal PSD referendum where 5,000 members voted against continuing the alliance with Bolojan. PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu cited the Prime Minister's harsh austerity measures as the primary reason for the fallout.

"Our members have become targets on the street because we are seen as the enablers of those who cut, close, and fire," Grindeanu stated. He apologized to voters and entrepreneurs, claiming the party can no longer stand by the current administration’s "fiscal crimes."

In response, Bolojan maintained that he would stay in office to ensure government continuity. He accused the PSD of agreeing to reforms in private while publicly attacking the cabinet in the media to gain electoral favor.

The withdrawal of support carries immediate consequences for the cabinet's stability. Six key ministers—including those of Justice, Health, Labor, and Energy—along with a Deputy Prime Minister, are expected to resign.

The Finance Ministry has warned that a prolonged deadlock could have "devastating consequences" for the national economy. The opposition has already begun to capitalize on the chaos, with AUR leader George Simion calling for snap elections.

The Bolojan government was inaugurated last summer with a significant majority of 301 votes. Under the original coalition agreement, Bolojan was set to lead the cabinet until 2027, before handing over the premiership to Sorin Grindeanu.
